Daddy Daae's LegendDaddy Daae's Legend
Daddy Daae's Legend The Story of the Angel of Music Daddy Daae, Christine's father, used to tell her stories about the Angel of Music who visits great artists. He promised that after his death, he would send the Angel to her. This legend becomes the foundation of Christine's faith. The Father's Death When Daddy Daae dies, Christine is inconsolable. She clings to the promise of the Angel. She enters the Conservatoire but loses her voice and spirit. She is a shadow of her former self. The Voice Appears Three months before the gala, Christine begins to hear a beautiful voice in her dressing-room. The voice claims to be the Angel of Music. She believes it without question, seeing it as her father's gift.
Mamma Valerius's FaithMamma Valerius's Faith
Mamma Valerius's Faith The Benefactress Mamma Valerius, Christine's adoptive mother, is a devoutly superstitious woman. She encourages Christine's belief in the Angel of Music, seeing it as a divine blessing. She tells Raoul that Christine is with her good genius. The Blind Trust Mamma Valerius does not question the voice's origin. She believes that the Angel forbids Christine to marry. She is content to wait for Christine's return from her mysterious visits. Her faith is so strong that Raoul cannot shake it. The Shattered Illusion When Christine finally reveals the truth about Erik, Mamma Valerius is shocked. But she remains loyal to Christine. Her blind faith in the Angel is a key element in the tragedy, as it allowed Erik to manipulate Christine for so long.
